TTK Hospital recognized that most welfare agencies are
city-based and the rural masses are being overlooked.
Addiction, violence and suicide are common in villages.
Women in rural areas are largely illiterate and are
unable to access information.
To address these issues,
TTK Hospital ,with the support of the UNESCO, undertook
a project with the objectives of creating a healthy
environment in rural communities by increasing the
awareness level of women and also identifying resources
in the community for HIV counseling and testing,
addiction treatment and vocational training.
Vision of the Project
Preventing alcohol and drug use and creating awareness about
HIV/AIDS, STDs and encouraging and effecting personal development of
women through enhancing their parenting skills, self esteem and
mental health.
Promoting health seeking behaviour among women
Resource mapping and networking among GOs and NGOs
treatment centres for alcohol and drug abuse
HIV testing
STD
treatment
Vocational training centres
Teaching some of them one particular skill towards generating
additional income
Building capacity of TTK & partner NGOs in documentation and
evaluation
Target Population
Women from remote rural areas in 3 locations in Tamil Nadu
Thiruvarur
Trichy
Karamadai
Members of micro credit groups (SHGs)
6500 women from each location and in total 20000 women
