Relapse Prevention and Management Support at 'Poorna'

Recovery from addiction is a complex issue involving the recovering patient, his family and also the community around him both at work and at home. Addiction results in a lifestyle centered around the addictive behaviour.

To enjoy sobriety, individuals must not only discontinue the use of drugs and alcohol, they must also restructure their entire lives. Unable to cope with the stresses and problems created by this new way of life, some clients do relapse. Such individuals need direction and additional support.

The relapse ward ‘Poorna’ addresses the needs of those clients, guides them through their Relapse prevention and management programmes and equips them with special skills to handle triggers and other high risk situations so that they can manage their recovery process better.

There is a programme for patients for five days and a parallel programme for family members. Clients who have one or two days of drinking or slip are dealt by providing immediate admission or out-patient detoxification.

The facility has been funded by the Chennai Willingdon Corporate Foundation. This new relapse wing is situated in a 6000 sq.ft. area with a general ward to accommodate 12 clients. There are therapy rooms and one exclusive ward to accommodate family members.
