Understanding addiction as a disease |
| |
Addiction to alcohol / drugs is not a sign of moral weakness or lack of will power. It is a disease which leads to physical and emotional problems. It also causes problems in almost all areas of life. Our authentic experience in having treated over
20,000 patients during the last 29 years, has strengthened our belief that addicts, when provided timely treatment and support can lead quality lives free of alcohol and drugs.
|
| |
|
|
Treatment aims at total abstinence and improved quality of life.

Detox facilities to mitigate withdrawal problems |
| |
Patients are admitted to the detoxification unit where the required medical treatment is given. Withdrawal symptoms due to sudden stoppage of drug usage are made less painful and health problems associated with addiction are dealt with. |
| |
When the physical condition of the patient stabilizes, he is introduced to the psychological therapy programme. |
 |
| |
Psychological therapy |
| |
Psychological therapy comprises individual counseling, educative sessions and group therapy. Individual care and attention are given to patients. |
|
Ongoing free follow-up services are given for 2 - 3 years. |
 |
| |
Support groups – AA and Al-anon |
| |
Patients and family members are encouraged to attend Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Al-anon meetings. Meetings are also held at the hospital premises. |
 |
| |
Helping the family towards leading a qualitative life |
| |
Addiction is an illness that affects not only the addicted individual, but also his family members. |
| |
The family is provided with emotional support to manage the stress caused by the behaviour of the addict. Guidelines to help the patient in his recovery form part of this two week programme. Since family is a powerful support in recovery, family members’ attendance to the family programme is mandatory. |
 |
| |
Social Support Programme |
| |
The Social Support Programme aims at exploring the possible support the recovering patients can receive from the society in which they live and utilizing it towards their recovery. |
| |
The support persons are usually family members (other than the spouse) or co-workers or friends. Contact with the support persons helps in stabilizing recovery and ensuring regular follow-up. |
| |
The support persons’ programme is conducted on alternate Saturdays from 10.00 a.m. to 11.30 a.m.
